About Our Community

The Sat Yoga Ashram and Eco-Village has been in the planning for a decade – since the events of 9/11 in fact. The ashram and eco-village have gradually come into being through the vision and dedication of Sat Yoga’s director, Shunyamurti, his wife, Radha, and committed members of the community which includes a few of Costa Rica’s entrepreneurial visionaries. Initial funding for the project has been raised from the ashram’s founders, members of the Sat Yoga community as well as generous support of some of Costa Rica’s leading luminaries. While a start, there is still much to be accomplished.

shunyamurti

Shunyamurti is the founder and research director of the Sat Yoga Institute, headquartered in Costa Rica. The institute's mission is to accelerate the transformation of human consciousness and contribute to the spiritual and cultural renaissance that is fermenting now on our planet. Shunyamurti was inspired to lead such an effort as a result of his own inner work that has led to attunement with the ultimate source of consciousness.

Shunyamurti's spiritual path has been wide-ranging and profound. It has included many years of Yogic training, in diverse forms of Yoga, including five years of intensive practice of classical Ashtanga Yoga followed by ten years spent in a formal Raja Yoga monastic order, and many more years of meditative practice in diverse spiritual traditions. He has also deeply studied and then practiced numerous other transformational disciplines, from shamanism and subtle energy work to various schools of psychology, psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, bodywork, dreamwork, and psychoanalysis.

In 2001, Shunyamurti received another vision, to build an "ark" to survive the cataclysms of a world in chaos. SYI was designed to be an advanced spiritual school and ultimately a self-sustaining creative eco-community that could serve as a transitional medium to bring humans from the present state of ego-consciousness to the next state, that of full Self-realization and reintegration with the Cosmic Intelligence. He foresaw that Costa Rica would become a major center of the new global culture of peace. Thus was the Sat Yoga Institute & Community conceived.

Jagdish & Marjiva PDF Print E-mail

jagdishTmarjivaogether, Jagdish and Marjiva founded Costa Rica Entomological Supply in 1983, Latin America's first commercial butterfly farm and in 1990, The Butterfly Farm, the first live-butterfly exhibit in the region. Natives of the United States and Portugal respectively, Jagdish arrived to Costa Rica straight out of college as a Peace Corps volunteer while Marjiva came to complete her master's thesis in International Development. In the succeeding 27 years their businesses have flourished and served as inspiration for many entomologically-minded entrepreneurs. Their story is an INCAE Business School case study whereby an impossible vision as measured by all the traditional means (cash flow, available capital, knowledge, market, existing legislation, etc.) was nutured over decades into a reality that came to employ hundreds of Costa Rican families and generate significant foreign revenues for the country. In 2008 CRES was recognized by the Harvard Business School as a leading example of social enterprise in Latin America.

Having devoted the early part of their careers understanding the scientific and commercial realm of butterflies, today they are focused on embodying its metaphysical and symbolic teaching, understandings that have been understood for thousands of years but all but forgotten today.
